Does Insurance Cover Auto Glass Replacement?

Oct 29

Insurance companies do not always cover the costs of auto glass replacement, but some offer coverage in your comprehensive insurance policy.  It all depends on the company. If you have comprehensive coverage in your car insurance policy with glass coverage, it would be covered under that clause. However, most people don't get this type of insurance because they believe that minor cracks and chips do not need to be replaced; however, this is one case where getting an auto glass replacement is necessary for more than just aesthetics.

Auto glass that has been damaged by a rock or other road debris needs to be taken care of immediately. Most people rely on their car insurance policy to take care of these things; however, if it is too small or assumed to be something minor, they might not get their claim approved. In order to avoid any problems, you should report the incident as soon as possible and have it documented by a police officer.

If you do not have this type of insurance there are companies that offer auto glass replacement instead of going through your insurance company or paying out of pocket for an expensive window bill. There are many small repairs that can be fixed at a discounted price because the risk factor is low in comparison to car doors and windshields in general which is why some companies choose to include screen repair in their services.

If you do have insurance, go to your policy and find out exactly what is covered under the glass clause. There are some policies that will cover everything from a small rock chip to a whole windshield replacement if necessary. Sometimes it is cheaper for them to pay the deductible on your comprehensive policy than get an insurance claim through another company which can cause issues in getting all of your money back.

Many people get away with only paying the deductible but not everyone gets so lucky so be sure to check before calling up around or calling your insurance company about it because they could save you hundreds by replacing the window themselves versus having to pay your deductible and not reimbursing you for labor costs. It also might be beneficial for you if their rates go up if they have to take out a claim on you in the future.

In conclusion, car insurance companies will not cover auto glass replacement unless it is part of their comprehensive policy which will only replace your windshield or other windows that were broken by something external such as a rock or another vehicle. This is why it is important to check with your insurance company before having any work done because it could save you money.  If you have no coverage for this type of thing then there are many companies that offer replacements at a cheaper rate than going through an insurance claim but make sure to read all fine print and compare rates so that you don't get stuck paying anything unexpected.

However, if you do have your glass replaced by an insurance company, call them back and ask for the total cost upfront so that you can compare it to external companies.  This way you know exactly what you are getting into and how much it will cost in the end. Some of these things can get really expensive if they break down the price per hour or even give an estimate at all which is why it is important to be careful when making this type of decision.

Also, always consider talking to more than one company so that you get the best rates possible because different companies might provide better service with reliable technicians while other companies might not offer anything lower than their competitors. This also goes for cheap windshield replacements versus ones with high-quality aftermarket parts. You would be surprised at how much of a difference it can make when you choose one over the other because some companies will not use high-quality parts and might even install them their own way to save money.
